Hong Kong Racing History

Horse racing has been a pastime in Hong Kong since the 1800's. Happy Valley racetrack was built in 1845 and hosted its first race in December 1846. From there, horse racing’s popularity in Hong Kong quickly grew.

Hong Kong International Races

The Hong Kong International Races were created in 1989 with the Hong Kong Cup. Initially called the Hong Kong Invitation Cup and restricted to horses from Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong, the first winner of the ‘Cup’ was a horse named Flying Dancer. The race quickly gained attention and gradually opened to horses from other countries. More races were added to the card in 1991 and today top international horses compete in the Hong Kong Cup, Hong Kong Mile, Hong Kong Vase & Hong Kong Sprint.
