The Santa Anita Derby is a Grade 1 horse race for 3-year-old Thoroughbreds, held in April at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California. The race is currently run at a distance of 1+1⁄8 miles on dirt, and has a purse of $750,000. As one of the last prep races on the Road to the Kentucky Derby, the Santa Anita Derby has been an important stepping-stone to the Kentucky Derby since its inauguration in 1935. Since 2013, the race has been included in the official Road to the Kentucky Derby, with the winner receiving 100 points and a guaranteed spot in the starting gate.
The Santa Anita Derby has a rich history, with notable past winners including Stagecoach in 1938, the only colt to win both the Santa Anita Derby and the Santa Anita Handicap in the same year, defeating Horse of the Year Seabiscuit in the latter.
Several races leading up to the Santa Anita Derby are also on the Road to the Kentucky Derby, including the San Rafael Stakes, San Miguel Stakes, Sham Stakes, San Vicente Stakes, San Pedro Stakes, Robert B. Lewis Stakes, and San Felipe Stakes, all held at Santa Anita Park.

Santa Anita Derby History: Inaugurated in 1935, the Santa Anita Derby is the main West Coast prep for the Kentucky Derby. Since its inception, six Santa Anita Derby winners have gone on to win the Kentucky Derby. The Santa Anita Derby is contested by 3-year-olds at a distance of 1 1/8 miles (9 furlongs).
