Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Late Pick 4 Analysis | Monday, June 5, 2023

Yonkers Raceway has a 12-race card in place. The feature goes in Race 8, an Open Handicap Pace with a $36,000 purse. The $1.00 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 9, and the sequence will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 9 (9:40 PM EST)

1-Delightful Dude N (9/2)-Might be overlooked and could be a player at this level from the rail. Will excuse the last race from post 7, stayed inside and did close in 54.4. Marohn needs to provide a sharp steer and has the gate speed to race at the top of the stack.
5-Kingsville (4-1)-This 4-year-old could be a serious player if Joe B guns out and lands on the point. Have to believe that will be the plan in a half-mile race.
6-Fortify (7/2)-Comes off a gate to wire score versus a stronger group than this and Brennan sticks here over #5. The win was from the rail, will need a good trip and has enough gate speed to land in a decent seat. This is a nice spot to double up.

Race 10 (10:00 PM EST)

4-Night Hawk (8/5)-Made its YR debut on 5-29 and was off 24 days between starts. Was driven aggressively to get the lead and then landed in the pocket behind the even money chalk. Pulled before the final turn and couldn't catch a well-meant winner. Should be tighter, gets class relief and all systems should be "go" for a picture.

Race 11 (10:20 PM EST)-

3-Splash Brother (3-1)-Will toss the last start from the 7-hole in a race with a dull pace versus better. This is a meaningful drop in class, and Zeron should put in play once the wings fold.
4-Air Force Hanover (8-1)-Not my favorite horse but the trainer change to the Daguet barn on 3-24 has made a difference. This is another case of overlooking the last line from the 7-hole. Could offer a nice price and has become competitive again. Will look for a return to previous form and to be leaving to get a close-up seat.

Race 12 (10:40 PM EST)

1-King James Express (5/2)-Comes off a gate to wire score and was perfectly driven as Joe B got a 29.4 second quarter breather. Tonight's 2nd morning line chalk #5 went off at 3/5 and was as flat as a pancake starting from post 1. A similar trip could happen and can't find a reason to not endorse here.
7-Theflyingrock (6-1)-Raced against the one above last week, was handled conservatively off the gate and came away 5th as there were a few leavers. Sat inside and showed some life on the back side and looked full of pace with nowhere to go down the lane. Bartlett won with the Engblom pupil at this level back on 4-5 and should be a solid price here. Will look for a meaningful try in the 3rd straight YR start since returning from Philly.
