It's closing day at The Red Mile and there is a loaded Grand Circuit card. The Early $1.00 Pick 4 will benefit from an $8,974 carryover which leads to a $40,000 guaranteed pool. The sequence will start in Race 6, it has a low 12% takeout, and it will be my focus.
Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.
Race 6 (2:35 PM EST)
2-Prince Of Honor (5/2)-Willing to forgive the last race from post 7 against some tough customers, faded after coming 1st over. Gets a nice draw for a cozy trip and fits much better here.
5-Little Expensive (5-1)-Finished 2nd to Oh Well last week and there isn't a trotter of that caliber in this field. This looks like a good opportunity to cash the top check and is well worth a swing at the program price.
Race 7 (2:54 PM EST)
3-Canterbury Hanover (8-1)-Team Gregory price shot is usually in the hunt at the wire when facing better. Should race near the top of the stack and knows how to compete.
5-Flyingdrumsticks S (3-1)-Broke at the start in the Bluegrass and was able to rally to finish 3rd with a 25.4 last quarter. This will be the 2nd race at Lex and it should be all systems go for a picture if minds manners.
6-Bravo Angel S (7-1)-Should offer a price and fits better with this bunch. Raced gamely down the lane and might have finished a bit better but was blocked in the late going. Should be driven more agressively now and is another good price that could be used underneath as well.
Race 8 (3:13 PM EST)
2-McSeaside (7/2)-Burke trainee raced from the back and was aided by a 53.3 first half. Rallied hard to win by a nose and this is a versatile filly. Dunn has options, could win coming off cover or might look to wire this crew.
3-Mollop Hanover (5-1)-Mohawk shipper was used hard to land on the point into some super quick fractions and just missed by a nose. JMac should have the Beaton trainee in striking range turning for the wire.
4-High Fashion Star (8-1)-Comes out of the same race as the ones above and closed nicely to finish 3rd. That was the first start in over a month. Price shot has won 3 of 6 at Lex and can be in the hunt.
5-Sylvia Hanover (5/2)-Won easily last week coming off cover and that is the usual game plan. This is a great filly who has won 16 of 19 and seems to do it the hard way more often than not. That's the reason to use the others, in case of a bumpy trip. This is the likely winner, with a smooth journey and if not pace compromised. Respecting but will look for an upset.
Race 9 (3:32 PM EST)
1-Horizontal (5-1)-This three-year-old has been winning and cashing checks versus its own age group. Should be in the mix with an inside draw and could be up to the challenge at a fair price.
6-Pleaseletmeknow (7/2)-The Travis Alexander trainee usually does fine work on smaller ovals. Tuned up with a couple of nice qualifiers at Lex, the last went in 149.3. Came 2nd to Ammo in the tune-up and had a 26.1 in last panel. Shows big speed plus good finishes on the mile oval at M1 and looks like a main player.
