Frank Carulli: Gulfstream Park Late Pick 4 Analysis | Friday, November 10, 2023

Who can go the distance? That will be the key to unlocking Gulfstream Park’s 50-cent Late Pick 4 this Friday, Nov. 10, as three of the four legs will be contested at one mile and 70 yards on the synthetic surface. The Pick 4 encompasses races 6 through 9 on the card, which are also part of the Jackpot Pick 6 sequence that features at $77,622 carryover pool.

GP 6th race (2:34 P.M. EST) -- REFUGIADA made an eye-catching 4-wide rally on the final turn of her first route attempt and probably would have won if she didn’t lug in through the stretch. Four of the last eight second-time routers for trainer Victor Barboza lost in a photo finish. With a couple stretch-out sprinters added to the lineup, she should get ample pace flow to win as today’s Pick 4 solo play.

GP 7th race (3:04 P.M. EST) -- Five of North America’s Top 20 sires of 2-year-olds this year are represented in this eight-horse Maiden Special Weight test at 7F. DEFLECTION will try to enhance Justify’s No. 1 ranking (22 winners from 52 runners) in her debut for Jose D’Angelo, who is locked in a three-way battle for leading trainer. Deflection’s dam, Chauncey, was a first-out and two-time allowance winner and Grade 3-placed at the distance. SHINING SKY got up late to finish a distant third at 5-1/2F first out, but she finished 3-1/2 lengths in front of next-out route winner De Regreso and worked one mile twice since that race, suggesting the added ground will be a plus. BROOKMESA met eventual Grade 1 winner Candied in her first start at Saratoga, showed improved speed and stamina on the stretch-out to a long sprint when second last out and draws the rail off a bullet workout over the track. HAPPY TOGETHER, a $425,000 purchase, debuts for the always-dangerous Todd Pletcher barn, whose 2-year-old first-time starters at Gulfstream Park this year and only 1-for-9, with six being dismissed at 9-2 odds or less.

GP 8th race (3:34 P.M. EST) -- Half of this crowded optional claiming race field arrives from out of town, five come off wins and together they are 36-for-102 on synthetic tracks. FLY THE W is a deserving favorite off a horrific trip that cost him a fifth consecutive victory, but I’ll take a chance and go deep in this leg of the Pick 4.

GP 9th race (4:04 P.M. EST) -- ENGLISH PAINTER has a win and a troubled second on the Tapeta surface, goes from one good barn to another and doesn’t shy from the photo-finish camera, making him a use at 8-1 on the morning line. NIGHT JUMPER takes a magnified class drop below his claim level after facing the likes of recent stakes winner St. Anthony and razor sharp Volcanic going a route of ground. He changes riders for the ninth consecutive start. BROOKLYN STRONG fits well on his best effort, if only he can avoid another troubled start.
