Al Cimaglia: Northfield Park Late Pick 4 Analysis | Sunday, December 8, 2024

Northfield Park has a 16-race card to begin the week. The $1.00 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 11. The sequence has a $10,000 guaranteed pool with a 14% takeout, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 11 (9:40 PM EST)

4-One Last Laugh (9/2)-The 7-year-old doesn't take much air, stays inside and waits for an opening. This isn't a deep group of Open Handicap horses, and is a trip out possibility. Aaron Merriman arrives on the scene, and he can make a winning difference at a square price.
6-Gung Ho (3-1)-Meadows shipper arrives off a win and will be tested at this level taking on older. Ron Burke usually puts them in where they can win, so best to respect.
8-Surreal Ideal (5/2)-Winner in 7 of 8 is on a 5-race win streak, and is still the one to beat despite the outside draw. Is a proven winner from this starting spot and the streak can keep going with a fair trip.

Race 12 (10:02 PM EST)

2-Stumpy (9/2)-Usually the 4-year-old gets close but slow starts prevent notching a win. But will look to use after getting significant post relief and could end up close enough to the leader turning for the wire.
4-Jogging Full Trot (5-1)-This is another without good gate speed but may have met a beatable field. Raced fine in last at this level but starting in this post rather than on the rail could work better for Hunter Myers.
5-Happy Chopper (8/5)-The Burke pupil is the program chalk, the only 3-year-old in the field and is a filly. Plus, has raced once in the last month and makes its Nfld debut, but did bank over $100k this year. Using but not completely sold.

Race 13 (10:24 PM EST)

4-JuJu Hanover (9/2)-The Elson Miller trainee has been in too tough and now drops to a competitive level. The trainer steers, and that shouldn't hurt. Should have enough gate speed to land on the point or get a pocket ride and that makes the 5-year-old a player.
5-Southwind Amazon (3-1)-Not sure if this will be the last start for this great battler but there aren't many left. The 14-year-old hasn't been used off the gate in the last 4 races. Ronnie Wrenn gets the call, and an aggressive steer could be coming.

Race 14 (10:46 PM EST)

3-Tremendous Play (9-1)-Takes a meaningful drop in class and has the gate speed to get on the engine or land in the pocket. Comes back in sequence and Chris Lems should have in play from start to finish.
9-Shell Yeah (7-1)-Will take a swing here and leave the 2 program chalks (2-8) off the ticket. Raced well versus this kind last week and had a big try from post 9 at the end of October. Will need an efficient trip by Justin Irvine and could surprise if gets off the gate in good shape.
