Cal Expo has a 10-race card to begin the weekend. The 0.20 Early Pick 5 with a $20,000 guaranteed pool goes in Race 1. The 0.20 Late Pick 4 with a $25,000 guaranteed pool starts in Race 7, and it will be my focus.
Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.
Race 7 (8:45 PM PST)
3-Dougs Moonshine (6-1)-Bertrand 3-year-old rolled home with 58.3 back half to break its maiden. Loses James Kennedy but draws inside and should offer a solid price in a race without a true standout.
4-JK Cache Meoutside (7/2)-Finished a close 2nd in the 1st start off the bench and it was the 1st race on Lasix. Raced well and should be tighter tonight.
6-Blazin For Life (9/2)-Left, worked to get the top in last and that cost the Roland trainee later in the mile. Moves in a slot and the journey to get on the point should be less taxing. Could be overlooked and this race might set up for Kennedy to control the mile.
Race 8 (9:05 PM PST)
3-Zach Maguire N (5/2)-Was used a couple of times and took a picture after a 3-week absence. Beat the $5K claimers and meets a bit better but still fits. Luke Plano sticks and could go off at higher than 9/5 this week.
8-LA Puddie A (6-1)-This 9-year-old posted a win in a 156.4 mile getting on the engine in last. That was almost 5 seconds better than the qualifier which was also on a fast track the week before. The program comment says amazing mile and makes sense after going 0-24 last year. Maybe it was a one-off, and now has to deal with an outside draw. But anything close to that mile should be good enough for another trip to the winner's circle.
Race 9 (9:25 PM PST)
1-Brooklyn Diva (8/5)-This filly won her debut by 15-lengths on a sloppy track. Then stepped up and was 11 lengths back at the 1st call. Took the long way around and came a close 3rd. Gets a ++ driver change tonight, and there isn't anyone to fear in this group. Should get an improved trip and can have her way with this field.
Race 10 (9:45 PM PST)
4-Love Your Work A (2-1)-Nick Roland steers and trains, the program chalk deserves respect, but slow starts have hurt at times. The price will be small but need to use and can't fully trust.
6-Jackie Boy (6-1)-This 4-year-old has hit the board at CalX in 6 of 10 races with 2 pictures. Could connect at a nice price. Likes to finish off miles but needs to get a sharp steer and be in striking range at the top of the lane.
