Cal Expo has a 10-race card and the 0.20 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 7. The sequence has a $25,000 guaranteed pool, and it will be my focus. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.
Race 7 (8:35 PM PST)
3-Daniel's Son (6-1)-The 6-year-old was racing well and then was hung the mile in last. James Kennedy won't let the same happen this time. Bumps up, and has been the chalk in 3 of the of the last 4 races but could be overlooked tonight.
6-Stening A (12-1)-Cashed a 3rd place check versus this kind in last. Closes in a hurry but slow starts make his road bumpier. Should be a big price and may catch the leader down the lane with a sharp steer.
8-Robbie Burns N (3-1)-The 14-year-old has his game in high gear winning the last 2 starts and made it look easy. Starts outside but is still the one to beat and best to not overlook.
Race 8 (8:55 PM PST)
5-Marced In Faith (5/2)-Team Plano veteran beat the $6k claimers handily last week and fits well with this crew. The last win came from post 10, now moves inside and has much better gate speed than the chalk #8.
8-Southwind Molly (2-1)-Drops to a good spot to get the 2nd win of the year. Can grind its way around and be a factor down the lane. Could catch the one above if doesn't have a ton of work to do.
Race 9 (9:15 PM PST)
1-Bunkerhill Phil (3-1)-Drops to the basement and Jim Lackey can work a cozy trip. This look like a suck-around win candidate.
4-Prodigal (8/5)-Not sure anyone deserves to be 8/5 in this race but this 14-year-old has done some good work at CalX. Did hang in there in last, and the pace was lively for this kind. Could take a picture versus this bunch.
Race 10 (9:35 PM PST)
2-Captain Cosette (6-1)-This gal likes to stay inside and does best with a good early seat. Should be racing with the leaders and then could use one move down the lane to roll by.
3-Little Miss Boss (3-1)-This mare will look to follow a similar plan as the one above. Followed that script last time and missed by a nose. Has been a bridesmaid in the last 3 starts and can be a player at the wire.
9-Rocklikeahurricane (6-1)-Had been off for about 4 months before the 1st race in town on 2-7. Faded in last and should be better in the 2nd start at CalX. Kennedy can get the 4-year-old in striking range versus this group if dialed on high.
